Edge Brand Classic “469 \" African Hunter – Germany 1960s-1970s)

Offered is a vintage Edge Brand 469 \"AfricanHunter\" style stag-handled bowie knife. The knife shows only some signsof use and has been sharpened. It remains in excellent condition with noproblems at all. It does not appear to have been buffed or polished, showingjust the faintest bit of sheath rub. The blade was beautifully forged and isvery substantial. The carbon steelblade is 1/4\" thick and is free of any corrosion or pitting. Itwas polished to a deeply mirrored finish and is free of any staining,discoloration, or spots. The blade does have some fine scratches that can beeasily buffed out. Otherwise the knife does not appear to have been much used.The top edge from the clip point to the spine was ground to ease sharpening of the upper edge,if desired. The top edge of the knife can be used for batoning but this knifeshows no signs of being used this way. The nickel/silverguard is of thick highly polished aluminum and remains solid and tight.It is free of any damage. The handle is of high quality hick stag that isrichly colored and textured. The stag is free of any cracks, chips, orhairlines and remains solid and tight. The pommel is also of aluminum and hasno marring, dings, or damage. The pommel nut is the original and is flush andtight with no signs of stripping. The entire handle remains completely solidand tight with all components correctly aligned. The blade is 8-1/8\" and the knife measures 13-5/8\" inoverall length. The sheath isthe original and is in very good condition with no cuts, tears, or stains.The snap is tight and intact. It retains its full factory luster and thestitching is still bright white with no darkening at all. The knife weighs 13.6ounces without the sheath. The leather sheath weighs .7 ounces. This is a fineexample of the quality of Solingen knives made in the 1960s and 1970s.

Some History

GutmannCutlery was a large importer of quality knives that began operations in thelate 1940\'s, although they didn\'t start importing from Germany until 1950. One of their imported brands included Edge Brand (imported from Solingen, Germany). Edge Brandkniveswere always of excellent quality and they tended to be made by select high-quality makersin Germany. The thick, heavy blade is well-suited for camp life and the knife\'sversatile design and German quality make it well-suited for a wide variety ofother outdoor activities. This design was also offered by several other firmsincluding Carl Schlieper and several other U.S. import brands.
