Item description
Thisis a vintage VHF (2 meter) converter made by Tecraft; the “Nu-verter” model 144,sold by Sireno. It stems from the mid- to late fifties. It has two nuvistors forthe VHF RF stages (6DS4 and 6CW4), a 12AT7 double-triode as the mixer & IFcathode follower/output buffer, and a 6J6 miniature tube as the crystaloscillator/tripler for the LO injection frequency. It runs of 110V AC using abuilt-in power supply.

Theunit is in very good condition for its age. The inside is pristine. It isunmodified; actually the RF adjustments are still in their original position (sealedwith red lacquer) as they were once aligned by the factory. The two glass tubesdo not show any blackening on the inside of the glass so I do not think thisconverter has been used much over the years; the tubes should last you a longtime.
Ihave tested the converter using my HF radio as the IF (on 20 meter, see belowfor the details) and it still works perfect! The unit has great sensitivitywith a very low noise floor (thanks to the nuvistors)
Withthe 43.3333 crystal selected, the 144 to 148 MHz band is converted to the HFband segment of 14MHz to 18MHz. With the 43.833333MHz crystal, the 144 to148MHz band converts to the HF band segment of 12.5MHz to 16.5 MHz.
Soif you use only the 20 meter band as the intermediate frequency for thisconverter (being 14.0 to 14.5 on a vintage HF radio), the 2m band coverage forthis converter is 144.0 to 144.5 MHz for the first crystal selected, and145.5MHz to 146MHz for the second crystal selected. I assume these were the mostactive portions of the 20 meter VHF band in the Fifties during which thisconverter was sold.
Ofcourse with today’s general coverage HF radios being present in just aboutevery ham shack, you won’t have any problem capturing the complete 2 meter bandwith this converter, regardless which one of the two LO crystals you would haveselected. The IF output stage on this converter has a tapped coil (called the “IFselector” accessible from the top) so that you can cover a wide IF range forthe whole 4 MHz span.
To summarize: This is a rare opportunity to relive the golden years of hamradio with this vintage piece of equipment. You never listened to the 2-meterband like THIS before. Don’t let this unit slip away now by offerding too late!
