Rare and incredibly historic lucite paperweight containing a piece of graphite from Chicago Pile - 1, the world's first artificial nuclear reactor. The worlds first human-made self sustaining nuclear reaction was accomplished via CP-1 on December 2, 1942.
The development of the reactor was the first major achievement for the Manhattan Project, which would lead to the development of the first atomic bomb during World War 2.
The graphite piece reads as follows : GRAPHITE FROM CP-1 - FIRST NUCLEAR REACTOR - DECEMBER 2, 1942 - STAGG FIELD - THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO.
Overall the paperweight measures approx. 3 5/8" wide, 1 1/2" deep, and 2 3/4" tall.
Condition - It has some small surface scratches, otherwise very nice!
