Only Printing / 1973 / 36 pages / Head Press Thoughboth issues of Short Order Comix receive a review score of 8, they achievethose scores through somewhat different paths. The second issue is moreconsistent and offers a broader scope of comic creators, but this firstissue—though a bit more volatile—offers the very best of the content in theseries.
The best of this content comes at the end of thisissue, where Art Spiegelman\'s four-page \"Prisoner On The HellPlanet,\" presents a harrowing account of the aftermath of Spiegelman\'smother\'s suicide. Spiegelman was just 20 years old and he had already sufferedan intense nervous breakdown and spent a month in a mental hospital beforefacing his mom\'s unexpected suicide. One can only imagine the agony he enduredafter such a horrific life event, yet Spiegelman admirably conveys thatexperience just a few years later in a comic book (did I already mention howunderground artists pursued deeper meaning in their creations? Yes I did).
Short Order #1 also features Bill Griffithexposing the superficial nature of fashion models (\"Zippy in \'Real LiveDolls\'\"), Spiegelman\'s satire on false muses (\"Just a Piece o\'Shit\") and Griffith\'s dissertation on shallow people in which they areliterally depicted as two-dimensional (\"Randy and Cherisse in the 2ndDimension\").
HISTORICAL FOOTNOTES:It is currently unknown how many copies of thiscomic book were printed. It has not been reprinted. Based on the credits listedbelow, you\'d expect the center spread collaboration on pages 18 and 19 tofeature work by Crumb, Green, Murphy and Kinney (and whoever \"Stuart\"is), but they only have \"cameo appearances\" in the center spread. Theartwork, which is quite awesome and was available as a poster for a short timeback when this was published, is primarily a collaboration between Spiegelman,Griffith and Schenkman.
