The date is 24 July 1969, the date of the safe re-entry of the Apollo 11 capsule - the first manned lunar landing.The envelop was waiting on board the USS Hornet, the ship assigned to recover the capsule on re-entry, as part of the US Navy Recovery Force.

An announcement was published that stated that a small number of envelopes would be allowed on board the USS Hornet.If you got your self-addressed, self-stamped envelope into the address they provided by a certain date, the envelops would be taken to the Hornet to await the safe recovery of the first manned lunar landing capsule.

My mother wanted to be part of such a historic event, so she sent hers off and was lucky enough to have made the cut. This envelop, with its special Apollo Manned Lunar Landing cancellation by the US Navy Recovery Force in the Pacific stamp is the result.The envelop was then mailed back to my mother and has been in a safe ever since.
