RARE 1800s Dixon's Graphite Pencils and Eagle Pencil Co Box:

Late 1800's antique Eagle Pencil Co. box of pencils, graphite sticks, square white crayons. 9 pencils total with Cooke & Cobb Accountant's Checking printed on the red paper wrappers including both black and red graphite, 12 Dixon's wooden 2 piece containers all filled with with graphite sticks except one which is empty and 2 boxes of antique Conte A Paris Crayons Dessin #2 (white square)in their original box. An incredible estate fresh find, the original Eagle pencil box, the pencils (likely made by Eagle or Dixon) and the Dixon's tubes filled with graphite are all very scarce to the market. A great add to a pencil collection. Box has some wear and soiling but very much intact, no split seams. Interior contents in very good condition. Amazing history to this item!
Square lead was used in most wood-cased pencils until the mid-1870s. All the black lead pencils exhibited at the Centennial in Philadelphia in 1876 contained square leads, and it is said that the Joseph Dixon Company was among the first manufacturers of pencils to use round leads, making the change shortly after the Centennial year. The other leading pencil manufacturers in the mid-late 1800's were Eberhard Faber, the Eagle Pencil Co. and the American Lead Pencil Co.The most recognize-able name in American pencils has been Dixon. By the late 1800s, with the help of industrialization, they were making 20 million pencils a year. The legendary Dixon Ticonderoga was named after the NY town where Dixon's graphite was mined.
