Title: Mid 1800\'s Sioux Indian Hammer Poll Tomahawk
Date: c1860
Description: This is a classic example of a hammer poll tomahawk from the mid 1800\'s. The axe head was traded to the Indians for their fur. Initially traded and used as a tool, Indians quickly saw the lethal potential of a hammer poll tomahawk and began to re-handle them for use as a weapon from horseback. Across the plains in towns and some travelling blacksmiths would use the axe head provided by the Indian and \"haft\" it or put a suitable handle on it. Sometimes the Indian would travel into a town to have this service completed and sometimes they would haft or handle their own axe heads but these handle are generally much more crude and primitive. This tomahawk is a rare style and would have been an impressive weapon carried by an Indian warrior or chief. A classic style from a bygone era. The tomahawk is in excellent condition with no repairs or damage. Nice hammer forged head and blade. Ash handle is original to the head. On the ash haft are several old square shank brass tacks, and a lovely beaded hide drop on the end. The beadwork is classic Sioux color and pattern. Nice long buckskin fringe, some red trade cloth sewn with old sequins. Pewter capped end of the haft. VERY NICE patina all over, really shows its age! The \"hammer poll\" style is very desirable. Date this axe to no later than 1860. No reasonable offer refused. 19\" haft, 6.5\" axe head, 16\" long drop. Originates from my grandfather\'s estate. I guarantee this axe to be authentic. Money back if appraised and is not as I have described it. Thank you so much for looking!
