Original Civil War P1853 Enfield Socket Bayonet Union Confederate :
$215.00

Nice and original Pattern 1853 Enfield socket bayonet with its original leather scabbard. This British-made accoutrement is an original angular socket bayonet made for the Model 1853 Enfield musket. The Enfield bayonet has the distinction of being the first universal issue bayo to the British Army that employed a locking device. Blade was made of the best cast steel and had an iron socket welded to it. The bayonet with its French-style locking ring has a triangular tapered blade with fullers on each face and was carried in a brass-mounted leather scabbard. Bayonet appears to have been cleaned at one time.

Measures approximately 20 5/8\" overall, with a 17 5/8\" blade and 3\" socket. various stampings on the shoulder near the socket, but no broad arrow mark - which indicates this particular bayonet wad intended for export. Blade bears a mottled light gray finish with scattered light peppery pitting overall. Production of the 1853 pattern socket bayonet continued throughout the life of the Enfield muzzleloader and the Snider Rifle and was finally terminated in 1875.

The black leather scabbard has a triangular body mounted with its original brass throat, clasp hook and tip. Leather body is in excellent strong condition with no flaking or crazing. Stitching tight and strong. Brass throat is tight to the body, but the tip has suffered a break through about 95% of the surrounding leather - making the tip very fragile.

A fine 1853 pattern bayonet specimen with its original and complete leather scabbard.

The bayonet remains in good condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. Blade bears a mottled light gray finish with scattered light peppery pitting overall. Some irregular areas along the blade edge is evident. The scabbard remains in fair condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. Some finish loss and scuffs from period use. The tip features a 95% break in the leather, making the scabbard tip very fragile. Displays superbly in the scabbard. Please see the pictures for more detail.
