The rest of the wood goes into bats for the rest of us.To cater to the needs and whims of professional ballplayers, bat makers travel around the major leagues, preparing new bats of finetuning old ones.Tony Amendola and Tony Pironti of Rawlings Adirondack visited the Tigers recently. The company makes bats for Marty Castillo, Kirk Gibson, Larry Herndonm Chet Lemon and Lance Parrish.Lemon had two new bats made: They started as billets - plugs of wood in the rough shape of a bat.The billet is honed down, using an old bat as a guide. Amendola checks his work with calipers to make sure he\'s following the guide.Once at the proper length and shape, the bat is sanded smoooth and flame-treated, which brings out the grame and helos to harden the bat. A: We package each order between two cross-corrugated pieces of cardboard to ensure that the package is as difficult to bend as possible.
