The famous magazine Scientific American was started in 1845 as a 4pp weekly publication by publisher Rufus M. Porter. As Porter was also an inventor, the early issues dealt mostly with inventions and the U. S. Patent office - and this focus was maintained when the publication was sold just 10 months later to Alfred E. Beach and Orson D. Munn, who operated as Munn & Co. Because they received so many inquiries from inventors and about inventions, Munn & Co. set up their own patent agency, which in short order became one of the largest in the world. Many noted inventors had a relationship with the company, such as A. B. Wilson, Elias Howe, Samuel F. B. Morse, John Ericsson, Dr. R. J. Gatling, Thomas A Edison, etc. The Centennial year was the 30 year anniversary of Scientific American, and text on the opening page acknowledges that.
This little booklet - with an illustration on the front cover of the grounds of the 1876 Centennial Expo and a calendar on the back cover for 1876 - served three purposes:
It described the Scientific American patent office, their research at the U. S. Patent Office, their publishing facilities (type room, editorial room, drafting room, printing room, and so forth. It provided an overview of the process of developing an idea into an invention, applying for a patent, and marketing the invention. It also advertised a brand new and separate weekly publication, Scientific American Supplement , which was spun out of the need to publish material relating to the Centennial Expo, which showcased state-of-the art manufactures and technologies. The Scientific American Supplement had broad international coverage and it focused less on patent inventions and more on science and technology in general. It was published from 1876 to 1919 alongside of Scientific American .
The sections include: The Scientific American Establishment, How to Get Rich, The Richness of Patents, How to Invent, The First Inquiry, The Preliminary Examination, How to Apply for a Patent, How We Do the Business, Appeals, Going to Washington, Caveats, Design Patents, Trademarks, Labels and Prints, Copyrights, About Models, How to Introduce Inventions, It Pays! It Pays! What Pays?, Rise and Progress of Trademarks, Foreign Patents: Splendid Opportunities for Americans in Other Countries (Canada, Great Britain, France and Belgium, Prussia and Other Countries), and What Twenty-Five Cents Will Buy.

The new Scientific American Supplement publication is discussed in the section on The Scientific American Establishment. The last section, What Twenty-Five Cents Will Buy, discusses another SA publication: Reference Book for Inventors and Mechanics , which included the complete patent laws of the US, abstracts of the Census of the US and Territories, and an section titled Mechanical Movements - with technical reference tables and some 150 engraved technical illustrations.
