Russian Lacquer Boxes are well known all over the world. The main schools of Russian lacquer miniatures is a unique branch of world applied art. There are four villages located not far from Moscow, which create Russian Lacquer Miniatures. The schools of these art (named by villages) are PALEKH, MYSTERA, KHOLUI and FEDOSKINO. Each village has its own style and favorite subjects: Fairy Tales, Village scenes, Landscapes and Bouquets. Every box is individual in its execution. Each box requires incredible amount of work.
Palekh.
Characterized by vibrant colors
with several applications of genuine gold paint, Palekh's painters are known for painting scenes from old Russian fairytales and poems, usually on black background.
Fedoskino.
The only artists to use oil paints, Fedoskino painters are also known for incorporating mother of pearl and gold inlays into their work. They specialize in portraying scenes of Russian village life, the countryside and architecture.
Mystera.
Known for their use of muted and
subtle shades of color, Mystera artists use pale blue, burgundy and pastel colors in their background scenes and use gold only to intricate
decorative borders around their scenes.
Kholui.
Influenced by the revolution and characterized by a bold style of painting, Kholui artists are less concerned with experimenting with color and innovative ways to portray traditional subject matter.
