HH Scott 272 Vintage Audiophile Integrated Tube Stereo Amplifier EL34 Amp NICE!!

Hermon Hosmer Scott is without doubt one of the greatest engineers in the history of Hi-Fi audio. His contributions are numerous, he invented the RC Oscillator, the selectively tuned RC circuit, various RC filters, the modern sweep circuit, the Dynaural Noise Suppressor, and much more; in fact he held over 100 patents for his innovative research in the field of electronics and has received many honors and awards for his work. A few years back when the Consumer Electronics Association named the 50 greatest contributors to the world of electronics Hermon Scott was on that short list of notable audio icons.

While completing his Masters at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Scott worked on the earliest motion picture sound systems as an engineer with Bell Telephone Laboratories. He latter became involved with the development of broadcast equipment for the professional audio industry. After much success with his first company, The Technology Instrument Corporation, Scott established his 2nd company in 1947, H.H. Scott Inc., concentrating his efforts on the emerging consumer market, while continuing to offer commercial \"laboratory-grade\" instruments for professionals.

The components produced by H.H. Scott over the subsequent 20 year period proved to be the finest of their kind. Mr. Scott never had a problem producing superior products his problem was promoting them. Scott was fiercely independent, so much so that he seemed unwilling to master marketing and competition, and had difficulty fighting his competitors\' cost-cutting strategies. Imports ate away at the company\'s market share, and in 1972, it finally went under.

Today as more and more collectors and audiophiles discover the outstanding craftsmanship and superior sonic attributes of the 50’s-60’s era tube components from H.H. Scott their value will undoubtedly go through the roof the way McIntosh and Marantz components did. I believe the vintage H.H. Scott products are the best kept secret in the Hi-Fi world and every bit as good as, and in some respects better than, the abovementioned manufacturers components. This is a strong statement, although after you audition the H.H. Scott 299 you will definitely see what I mean.

The 272 is the rarest of all HH Scott integrated amplifiers, and the most feature laden. It had a very short production from 1960 to 1961, very few were produced. IT has some unique, highly useful features such as; adjustable phono level controls, a dynamic noise suppressor , center channel level control, a low level magnetic stereo input, two high level magnetic stereo inputs, and three line level inputs, with the ability to use the 272s tone controls in such a way as to allow its use as an electronic crossover Each stage of the 272 was efficiently overbuilt, using the finest components, and unparalleled Scott circuit design, to achieve an amazing level a sonic performance. It is a true testament to the quality from an era long gone.

The 272 is a true technological masterpiece. It is a comprehensive component that even the most pious audiophile would be proud to own. Its sound is amazing; true emotion filled warmth, tight & tuneful bass, silky smooth mids & highs, and a broad & natural soundstage. The 272 depicts music from all sources, whether vintage or modern day digital, with stunning accuracy revealing even the most intricate sonic details. Its power is effortless, it sounds much louder than its very conservative 36 wpc power rating. The 272 is definite gem that is easy to fall in love with.

Condition:

Amp is coming from the estate of the original owner. They used this since new and maintained it periodically. Last service was in 2010. I personally tested the amp and all features and functions are working. Amp sounds great on both channels. I noticed a lot of the Electrolytic capacitors are original, thus these should eventually be changed if you want to maintain safe use into the future (a good recommendation for any electronic component reaching the 60 year mark). All the ECC83/12AX7 tubes are Telefunken. The EL34/6CA7 output tubes are National Electronics “Made in Germany” with the exception of 1 that is RCA “made in Great Britain” Cosmetically amp is clean, a little dust and minor signs of use, please see pics for details. One of the speaker output terminals is damaged, though speaker connection is fine..
