Generation 3 Fenris by K. Ali:
$315.00

This is a collector quality (Grade 1) prototype of the third generation version of Modell Design LLC\'s original Fenris combat knife. This knife was made by hand by K. Ali, whose work has been featured in Blade Magazine and various martial arts magazines. It features a mirror finish Bohler 440C Tool Steel blade.
Why 440C and not the latest \"super steel?\" Most of the knife super steels are variations of it; they tend to trade off corrosion resistance for other desirable characteristics. Many require a protective coating that is incompatible with using welded bolsters. 440C is used to make tools that cuts other steel. It remains to this day an outstanding combination of hardness, resilience, corrosion resistance (not that any stainless steel can forgo proper care and maintenance), and ability to be resharpened easily in the field at a fair price. Not all steel is created equal and if you are familiar with the knife world you know that Bohler is an extremely reliable high quality source. Finally if you want a military grade version 440C can be bead blasted for a matt finish. Our other favorite knife steel, Bohler D-2, does not take a bead blast finish (but in satin finish it does not need one).
The scales are of micarta(TM), which is a brand name, or micarta-type material (we can\'t be sure).
Additional quality features include welded bolsters, 8 small tactical pins and a decorative mosaic pin. There is thumb rest gimping and gimping on the spine-side of the blade for choking up and retraction. There is also some minor filework on the spine and full file work on both the top and bottom of the exposed tang adjacent to the handle scales.
This third generation is the result of response from law enforcement and military trainers including ex-special forces. The uniform thread from our experienced modern users (including ex-SEAL) was a preference for a blade in the low six inch range. Modell Design LLC continued its own research and determined that a tip grind specific to feudal Japan, which is presently generally referred to as a \"tri-point\" but we call a \"Yagyu Fat Nose,\" offers ease of penetration and withdrawal commensurate with a full swage but leaves a larger exit wound for accelerated blood loss. We slanted the handle more for better ergonomics and widened the blade to increase its utility given its shorter total length. The resulting product is just plain awkward and ugly looking, but our response group of experts all gravitated to it.
We are also saleing a prototype of the first generation of the Fenris design and a collector grade second genration version of the same.
The blade was professionally heat treated by a third-party specialist. The quality of the heat treatment is generally MORE IMPORTANT than the specific steel.
Do not store the knife in the sheath, or the sheath adjacent to the knife long-term, as leather extrudes corrosive oil and gives off corrosive fumes. Sheaths are for transport only, not storage. Please educate yourself on knife cleaning and maintenance to preserve your investment.
