Here is a superb pair of fossil fish from the world-famous fossil beds of Fossil Lake, Green River Formation, Wyoming. From the Eocene, 52 million years ago.
From the gastropod layer of Fossil Lake, this is two Mioplosus. Both are complete specimens with excellent ray fins, caudal fins (tail), vertebrae and both have visible sharp teeth.Handsome, dark blackish-brown pigment on these specimens, which is commonly found in this layer of the ancient lake.
The smaller of the two measures about 4.7\" in length and the larger is approximately 5.2\" in length.The plate measures about 11.7\" x 11.7\" and weighs 3 lbs. 14.0 oz.
This plate also features a couple of very cool gastropods on the front of it. Gastropods are fossilized snail / mollusks that lived in the ancient lake. One of the gastropods is a Goniobasis, which is a corkscrew shaped creature that lived in the lake.
A great display piece featuring two of the less common predators of Fossil Lake.We are happy to enclose a COA (Certificate of Authenticity). Some words of caution about COA\'s: Do not let them become a substitute for learning about the specimens. We have been working with fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very nice-looking COA\'s, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen. In addition, the person selling the item is often the one who writes the COA (potential conflict of interest). Finally, a COA without a photo of the exact item described, as part of that COA, is worthless, as it can later be placed next to any other fossil or mineral. We suggest that instead of relying on a COA, that people read and study the subject.
