Exceptionally Rare & Fine 1897 Gorham Sterling Silver & Niello Stars Snuff BoxArts & Crafts gem by the premier Providence silver manufacturing company Oversize domed rectangular form with rounded corners and bold rolled rims. Lid, sides and box handsomely decorated with technically demanding process of etching and firing chemical paste to form a hard black ground. Quality recessed 7-knuckle self-stopping hinge. Vermeil interior.
Left side of the box stamped with Gorham lion, anchor and G "930" and trident cypher.
NOTE: Research indicates less than a handful of late 19th century Gorham sterling match safes with "Russian" niello decoration reaching the market over the last dozen years. Zero Gorham niello snuff boxes appear on public record.
