  About Nephrite Jade

Jade is one of the oldest and most important gemstones, with a history dating over 7,000 years. It is especially prized throughout Chinese and Latin American cultures, often holding more value than gold. The term \'Jade\' was derived from \'Piedra de Ijada\', a Spanish phrase meaning \'stone for the pain in the side\' because Spanish explorers saw natives of Central America holding pieces of Jade to their sides, believing that it could cure ills. The name \'Nephrite\' was derived from the Greek word for \'kidney\', which refers to its supposed ability to cure kidney disease. Nephrite is one of two distinct mineral forms classified as Jade (the other is Jadeite) and up until 1863, Nephrite was believed to be one and the same as Jadeite.

Nephrite is a fibrous aggregate variety of tremolite-actinolite, a basic calcium magnesium iron silicate, whereas Jadeite is a pyroxene mineral. Nephrite is more common than Jadeite and although it is slightly softer than Jadeite, it is considered tougher due to its denser structure. Traditional Chinese Jade typically refers to Nephrite since there are no actual Jadeite deposits located in China. Today, green Nephrite is considered to be the most valuable Nephrite, but translucent, white Nephrite was considered the most valuable up until the introduction of fine Burmese \'Imperial\' Jadeite Jade during the 18th century.

Nephrite Jade Mythology, Metaphysical and Crystal Healing Properties

Since ancient times, Nephrite Jade has been used by many cultures for its powers. It was often used in burial ceremonies, since Jade was believed to be an \'imperial gem\'. Jade is believed to represent beauty, purity and grace. According to legend, after man was created, he wandered the earth weaponless and vulnerable to attacks from wild animals. The Storm God took pity on him and forged axes made of jade from a rainbow. The Storm God tossed these Jade weapons to Earth for man to find and use as weapons of protection. In the Maori language, Nephrite Jade is known as \'pounamu\'; it is highly prized throughout the Maori culture and is protected under the Treaty of Waitangi. Maori weapons were made of Nephrite Jade and often handed down as heirlooms as the Jade weapons were believed to hold very special power or \'mana\'.

Nephrite today is believed to be a stone of dreams. It is thought that it can bless whatever it touches. Depending on the actual color of the gem, it can possess a variety of powers. Physically, Nephrite is said to be a restorative stone. It is also very useful for cleansing the body, especially the kidneys, liver and spleen. Nephrite Jade is thought to be especially helpful for joint and bone related pain, and is also often used to help fight viral and bacterial infections.

Origin of Green Nephrite Jade

Green Nephrite Jade gemstone from Aceh Tengah (Takengon) and Nagan Raya regions in Sumatra Indonesia.

Black Nephrite Jade

is Nephrite colored by microscopic inclusions of dark minerals; known as Black Nephrite Jade.

Nephrite Jade is a common form of Jade found all over the world. Nephrite Jade belongs to the amphibole group of minerals and has a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale.

Though Nephrite is softer than Jadeite it is actually much tougher. Nephrites fracture strength is about 200 MN/m2 whereas Jadeites is about 100 MN/m2. This can be an explanation of why Nephrite Jade is commonly known as the “toughest natural stone on earth”.

This form of the Jade stone has been used for thousands of years because of its valued toughness and density which is the reason it has been used for everything from weapons to tools.

When the term toughness is used it is in regards to how brittle a material is. This is a large difference from the term ‘hardness’ used for stones which relates to how easily a mineral or material scratches.

Nephrite Jade is a tough stone because of its finely interlocked fibers. These are actually microscopic needle-like crystals which bind the stone together. These fine needles are randomly grouped together where the best quality Nephrite has a large amount of. When these small crystals are coarser the Jade is less tough.

What is Gold Vermeil? : VERMEIL, which is pronounced \"vehr-MAY,\" is 925 Sterling Silver with is plated with Gold.

Vermeil is a combination of Sterling Silver and Gold commonly used as a component in jewelry. A typical example is Sterling Silver coated with 18K or 24K Gold. To be considered VERMEIL, the gold must be at least 10 karats (42%) and be at least 2.5 micrometers thick. In the US and various other countries, Sterling Silver covered first with a base metal (such as nickel) and then plated with Gold cannot be sold as vermeil without disclosing that it contains base metal.

The word \"VERMEIL\" is a French word which came into use in the English language, mostly in America, in the 19th century as an alternative for the usual term silver-gilt.

Vermeil can be produced by either fire-gilding or electrolysis. The original fire-gilding process was developed in France in the mid-18th century; however, France later banned the production of vermeil because over time artisans developed blindness due to mercury involved in the process. Today, VERMEIL is produced by electrolysis which is much safer than fire gilding yet produces a very similar result

The White House has a collection of vermeil tableware kept on display (when not in use) in the Vermeil Room.

The Code of Federal Regulations 16, Part 23.5 defines Vermeil: \"An industry product may be described or marked as \'vermeil\' if it consists of a base of Sterling Silver coated or plated on all significant surfaces with Gold or Gold alloy of not less than 10 karat fineness, that is of substantial thickness and a minimum thickness throughout equivalent to two and one half (2 ½) microns (or approximately 1/10000ths of an inch) of fine Gold.\"

Less than 2.5 microns is NOT Vermeil and is considered as simple Gold plating only.

Vermeil Jewelry

Vermeil is a more expensive version of Gold plated jewelry. It consists of a 925 Sterling Silver base that is coated or plated with Gold.

And again, if the longest lifespan is in the first place for you, your option is VERMEIL

Vermeil is much more durable than simple very thin gold plating.

No wonder that the price is also high.

Gold plated jewelry

Gold plating is the term used to describe the process of plating jewelry made of either precious (silver) or non-precious base metal (zinc, nickel, copper) with a thin layer of gold, which is deposited by electrochemical methods. As it was said the layer is very thin and thus easy to scratch. It also naturally wears thin with time, exposing the metal below.
