Here is a superb fossil fish plate from the world-famous fossil beds of Fossil Lake, Green River Formation, Wyoming. From the Eocene, 52 million years ago.
This is a pair of Knightia eocaena, the State Fossil of Wyoming. Complete specimens with nice ray fins and caudel fin (tail). From the capping layer of the ancient lake, both Knightia have great definition and handsome dark brownish-amber toned scales.The plate color from this layer is a medium blue-gray tone, which is a great contrast to the pigment of the fossil fish.
The largest fish measures about 5.7\" in length and the smaller one is about 4.5\". The plate is about 14.7\" x 8.4\" and weighs 7 lbs. 7.25 oz.
This plate would make a pleasing display piece for any fossil fish collection.
