John Selwyn Brooke Lloyd, Baron Selwyn-Lloyd,was a notable British politician.
During the Second World War he rose to beDeputy Chief of Staff of Second Army, playingan important role in planning sea transport tothe Normandy beachhead and reaching theacting rank of brigadier.
Elected to Parliament in 1945, he held ministerialoffice from 1951, eventually rising to be ForeignSecretary under Prime Minister Anthony Edenfrom April 1955. His tenure coincided with theSuez Crisis, for which he at first attempted tonegotiate a peaceful settlement, before reluctantlyassisting with Eden\'s wish to negotiate collusionwith France and Israel as a prelude to military action.
He continued as Foreign Secretary under thepremiership of Harold Macmillan until July 1960,when he was moved to the job of Chancellorof the Exchequer. He returned to office underPrime Minister Alec Douglas-Home as Leaderof the House of Commons (1963–64), and waselected Speaker of the House of Commonsfrom 1971 until his retirement in 1976.
