The inaugural Hall of Famers claimed a combined 13 World Series Titles (Ruth 7, Gehrig 6) and posted staggering numbers throughout their careers. While they both dominated opposing pitchers on the field, their personalities off the field could not be more different.

Ruth was, and still remains, a larger than life figure, whose stature and playing style certainly matched his personality. Today we take for granted the exposure that professional athletes receive as celebrities; Ruth was certainly the first. He relished being a fan favorite and embraced his status as an American cultural icon.

Then there was Lou Gehrig, whose personality could not be further from Ruth’s - quiet and humble… baseball’s true gentleman. Gehrig’s modest approach was a great complement to the Babe’s grandiosity, and the Iron Horse had no problem giving his teammate most of the spotlight.

This particular example is no exception, and both specimens are gorgeously signed in bold, back fountain ink – Ruth 6/10, Gehrig 5/10 graded by PSA/DNA.

The ball on which they are presented is an Official American League Baseball from 1928 and is consistent in terms of condition, graded 7/10 for an overall grade of 6/10 by PSA. It features completely original stampings, which remain as bold as the day the ball was manufactured.

This relic is a period piece and hails from 1928, evident by the baseball and style of Babe Ruth’s signature. This particular style American League ball was only manufactured by Reach in 1928, and Ruth’s signature features quotes around “Babe” – a stylistic tendency he used in the 1920’s. Later on in his career, Ruth dropped the quotes and his signature became even larger. Autographs hailing from the subjects’ playing career are more coveted and valuable than those signed during retirement. In 1928 Ruth and Gehrig were both at the height of their careers.
