This is a really old, neat ice cuber. Not like todays by any stretch. This guy is sturdy beyond comprehension by todays standards. Back in the day, folks had to purchase blocks of ice, unlike today by just pushing a button at the fridge. This device, allowed you to put boiling water into the top chamber, while it was sitting atop the chunk of ice. Due to the heat from the water, it would heat up the metal projecting down, melting into the ice, and within a few minutes or so, would melt entirely throughprovidingit was the right depth. Then, wha-la, you would have your cubed ice!
This is a really nice piece of kitchen history, and one you very seldom see with the box!
