- \"Time Runs Out\" story-arc and road to Secret Wars begins
Leading an entire Universe of characters and their many respective individual ongoing series towards one single, culminating event is no easy feat, to say the least. But Jonathan Hickman, the writer of Avengers (Vol 5) and its sister series, New Avengers (Vol 3), did exactly that, developing an inter-laced and multi-faceted narrative between the two series that essentially became the roadmap that the entire Marvel 616 would use to follow Earth\'s Mightiest Heroes into his blockbuster 2015 event, Secret Wars. Hickman\'s was a well-laid plan, and it was a plan that came together splendidly.
From the very beginning of both series, characters as well as readers were very much aware something big and disastrous was on the horizon. The suspense, the anticipation was there present from Page One and only grew with each passing issue. Multiversal anomalies and Multi-dimensional dangers increased month by month, and then, with Avengers #035, Hickman officially set the Marvel Universe\'s \"Doomsday Clock\" to count down to Armageddon. Whatever was coming would happen in just eight (8) months; in eight months, \"Time Runs Out.\"
This same sense of linewide impending danger, of a countdown to complete annihilation, is what Marvel Studios is hoping to establish within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is now well-known to be marching towards its own version of Secret Wars. From Loki and Loki Season Two to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania,The Marvels and soon to Deadpool & Wolverine, the early warning signs of disaster have been witnessed. They haven\'t as yet been understood or grasped, however, by any of the MCU heroes who will soon have to act if they want to avoid the disastrous outcomes that would follow.
The MCU, then, has not yet experienced its own \"Time Runs Out\" revelation. It\'s as essential as it is inevitable that it will, of course, and, per a report from August 2023, it will happen in Doctor Strange 3, which will adapt \"Time Runs Out\" into a storyline that will continue into Avengers 5 (2025).From the events of those two films, as well as Fantastic Four (2025), the heroes of the MCU will fully comprehend that there\'s a clock ticking, and its a clock they likely have no power to stop.
Whether one considersAvengers #035 to be the \"First Appearance of \'Time Runs Out\'\" or as the integral, pivotal issue in which the \"Time Runs Out\" story-arc begins, its importance to at least two upcoming Marvel Studios\' movies as well as to the MCU overall is undeniable and cannot be over-stated.
