22210) Probably Civil War Used US Model 1832 Artillery Sword Ames Knife Military. This is an original Model 1832 Roman Style Artillery Short Sword Ames Knife Military. The \"foot artillery sword\" w. as approved with the 1832 regulation and it resembles a Roman gladiator sword. This was the last line of defense for the artilleryman. These were used as a tool as much as for fighting. Standard features include a brass handle with eagle cast on the pommel, cast fish scales for the grip. The blade has two fullers stopped with the ricasso on the upper blade, and single fuller on the tip. This is marked NP Ames, Springfield with eagle which is all somewhat worn. The reverse has US 1944 JH. The Cross Guard has JH on one side and W.A.T. on the other. This has tarnish and surface corrosion. There is some sharpness to the blade. The sword blade is just over 19 ¼ inches long. The overall is about 25 3/8 inches long. The scabbard is not all here and what is left is getting hard. This scabbard is still solid. We have not cleaned this piece so should clean up and look a little better. Wow some nice character here. This was probably used in both the Mexican and Civil War. I have had this since the 1980s. I purchased it on Roberts’s Rd. in Danvers Mass. in the early 1980s. It was one of my first pieces. We are starting to sort and refocus our military collection so we will be putting up some gems over the next few weeks. This is old and in used condition. This is solid. Please See Photos.
