Frank Cooper, U.S. Distributor forAJS and Matchless motorcycles an-nounces that the 1958 Scrambler twinswill sport several major changes anda great number of minor ones calcu-lated to make the popular models stillmore appealing to sports riders. The592 cc parallel twin AJS 30CS andMatchless G11CS have new cast andpolished aluminum primary covers se-cured by cheese-head screws replacingthe stamped steel covers of previousyears. The new alloy chain housinghas two inspection plugs for checkingchain tension, topping up the chain-case with oil, and for adjusting theclutch throw rod. These plugs areflush, with milled screwdriver slots,and lend themselves smoothly to thestreamlined shape of the chaincase.Other components have returned tothe drawing boards of Associated Mo-torcycle Company engineers to be im-proved or restyled. Among these is therear fender of the Scrambler twinswhich has been made wider, deeper,and longer to provide greater protec-tion. The rear frame section has beenmodified to accommodate new heavierrear shocks with longer movement thatnow slant forward to give better shockabsorbing action and consequently asmoother ride.The seat covering has been changedfrom black to a heavier duty tan ma-terial and the control levers now haveball-end rubber covers. Introducedlast year, an A.M.C. four-speed box isfitted. The gear change has been light-ened by use of a lower-rate selectorspring.To give the Scramblers a narrowerwidth and thus permit closer tuckingin, the oil filler cap has been relo-cated on the top of the tank where itwill not interfere with the rider’s leg.The new models are also fitted withthe 19-inch front wheels that havebeen proved to be so effective in com-petition, and the gas tanks, which re-tain their familiar contour, havestronger, rubber-cushioned rear mount-ing bracket, and new barrel type pet-cocks.A distinctive feature of the twincylinder engine is the use of a thirdbearing in the middle of the crank-shaft; the bearing is plain and carriedin a separate cast-aluminum plate. Thebig-end bearings are also plain andthe connecting rods are light-alloyforgings.The models are prettied up by com-pletely chromed forks and rims, newlight Mediterranean blue paint on thegas and oil tanks and tool box of theAJS, and a brighter red paint on thetanks and tool box of the Matchless.Pillion footrest lugs have been relo-cated and the crossover exhaust pipesand muffler have been raised to givemore ground clearance.Virtually ‘\'convertible” machines,the Scramblers can be purchased withfull quickly-detachable lighting equip-ment, which has a new voltage regu-lator of the unitized type, and used asroadsters. Wherever they are used, onthe road or in the rough, the AJS andMatchless Scrambler twins will per-form with the same flawless precisionthat has earned them a high place inthe regard of American motorcyclists.Other AJS and Matchless models willbe announced in CYCLE as they arereleased.
