• It was designed by Charles E.Riddiford, lithographed by A. Hoen & Company, and published by the National Geographic Society in 1949.
• The title cartouche includes a portrait of King George VIand his wife,parents of Queen Elizabeth II, who would succeed him to the throne fouryears after this map was printed.
• This map covers the United Kingdom of Great Britain andNorthernIreland, as well as the Republic of Ireland, which had separated fromthe British Commonwealth and declared itself a sovereign state the yearthis map was printed.
• Details on the map include cathedrals, castles,lighthouses, roads,railways, canals, and more.
• Surrounding the map are more than 40portraits, views, and coats of arms.

• Cartographer Charles E. Riddiford was a native ofWoolwich, England. Hegraduated from the Edinburgh Geographic Institute and served in theRoyal Flying Corps in World War I.
• Riddiford joined the prestigious Edinburghcartographic firm of John Bartholomew & Co. after the war andlater worked for Oxford University Press before moving to America towork for the National Geographic Society.
