As soon as I got out there I felt a strange relationship with the pitcher\'s mound. It was as if I\'d been born out there. Pitching just felt like the most natural thing in the world. Striking out batters was easy.\" -Babe Ruth

We tend to talk of Ruth the hitter, Ruth the slugger, Ruth the home run king, who revolutionized baseball and changed the game forever. But taking pause to talk of Ruth the pitcher, reveals one of the game’s greatest hurlers, a man who regularly beat Walter Johnson and held the record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched in a World Series until the late 1980’s. In the words of a sportswriter, who once penned a prolific article on Ruth’s switch from one of the game’s most dominant pitchers to its most feared and dominant hitter, “No sport has ever seen a transformation anything like Babe Ruth’s. It’s not even close. Ruth converting from one of baseball’s greatest pitchers – he most likely would have been a Hall of Fame pitcher if not for his ability to hit the ball out of the park – to baseball’s most acclaimed hitter would be the equivalent of Dick Butkus waking up one morning, deciding he wanted to become a quarterback and transforming himself into Johnny Unitas. It just doesn’t happen. That’s how rare and how special a talent Ruth was. Yet no one seems to really remember Ruth as a pitcher. And that is unfortunate.” A Rare And Possibly One Of A Kind Photo This amazing 6 ½” x 8 ¼” image of Babe Ruth was first published on March 22, 1919. The date is of historic merit. On March 21, 1919 Babe Ruth ended a lengthy and rather public battle with Red Sox management, signing a three-year contract valued at $27,000 according an article published in The New York Times. The contract signed by Ruth, ironically, in New York where he met with Red Sox owner Harry Frazee would be the last he\\ would ever sign with Boston, considering that his rights were sold to the Yankees the following year. One of the conditions of Ruth’s contract was that he would report to Spring Training in Tampa immediately, which he did. The move to Tampa was suggested by Giants Manager John McGraw, who saw Ruth as an attendance draw following a 1918 season that saw baseball’s newest star help the Red Sox win the World Series. Ruth also led the league in home runs with 11, in a mere 95 at-bats, while also winning 13 of his 20 starts, posting a 2.22 ERA and winning another 2 games in the World Series as the Sox downed the Chicago Cubs. Given the fact that Ruth had not yet reported to Spring Training at the time of the photo, the shot was most likely taken during the 1918 Red Sox World Championship season. Ruth’s appearance, build and uniform in this shot are consistent with this theory. There are few artifacts in the hobby so great as an original Babe Ruth antiquity. This photo comes from the moment in history that marked a change in Ruth’s eventual course. His relationship with Boston management was splintered and Harry Frazee now viewed Ruth as little more than asset requiring more capitol than he cared to invest. When the Red Sox on-field fortunes plummeted in 1919, Frazee placed his other interests above those of the ball club and made the most infamous sale in sports history. This photograph was witness to the event that helped set the wheels of Babe Ruth’s sale to New York in motion, making it a historic artifact of great importance . . . and considerable value
