1843 BILL OF LADING / LETTER / COVER - SHIPMENT FROM BOSTON TO NEW ORLEANS:
$45.00

We are offering a Bill of Lading dated December 8th, 1843, for the shipment of a 19-foot Cedar, Copper Fastened Yaul [sometimes spelled Yawl], a small boat used for inshore fishing. The boat was shipped on the vessel "Charleston" from the Port of Boston bound for New Orleans, Master [captain] Reuben Eldridge. The boat was shipped to Daniel L. Winsor in New Orleans from his brother, Edward Winsor in Boston and the bill of lading was signed by Captain Eldridge. **NOTE** - there is a 2nd page of the B. of L., on which a letter was written by Edward to his brother Daniel. The bill of lading/letter also served as the envelope, as was the case during this period of time - after addressing it, it was folded in a certain way, and then sealed with a wax seal. It has a Boston postmark.
Edward writes, "My dear Brother, I send, per CharlestonCaptain Eldridge, 1 Boat as per Bill of Lading and Invoice herewith annexed". Edward advises Daniel to sell the boat, even at a loss, "as I think it better to sell than to pay any additional expense of storage". He says he will also be shipping another boat on the Dalmation, and that Captain Eldridge said he would paint the boat at no expense to him and he would be furnishing 1 keg of Lead and 1 gallon of Oil [we assume in lieu of payment] to the captain. Edward says he should have sent Daniel some beef which he had consigned to [someone] we assume on a ship to New Orleans......"Write me how you succeed in your new undertaking. Yours truly, Edw'd. Winsor". **CONDITION** - Excellent; it has the normal tear where the document was opened at the wax seal.
