The command module is the main control center of the Apollo spacecraft and the living quarters of the three astronauts. This includes a pressurized main crew cabin, astronaut's armchair, control instrument panel, optical electronic navigation system, communication system, environmental control system, battery, heat shield, thrust reverser system, front-end docking hatch, side hatch, five windows, and parachute retrieval system. The command module is the only intact part of the entire Apollo spacecraft and Saturn launch vehicle that returns to Earth.The unpressurized service module includes a main service propulsion engine and boosters required for entering and exiting lunar orbit, a thrust reverser system capable of attitude control and translation, a fuel tank containing hydrogen and oxygen reactants, a radiator for dissipating waste heat into space, and a high gain antenna. In addition to containing oxygen for human respiration, fuel tanks also produce water for drinking and environmental control. The service modules of Apollo 15, 16, and 17 also come with a scientific instrument module, which includes a mapping camera and a small sub satellite for studying the moon. The booster and main rocket engines, which make up the vast majority of the entire service module, have the function of multiple restarts, allowing the Apollo spacecraft to enter and exit lunar orbit and make route adjustments between Earth and the moon.
