[Early Illinois] Black Hawk War Officers Involved In Vandalia Land Purchase:
$325.00

One page, 8 ½ x 12, part-print, official document of the auditor of Vandalia, IL, of a public sale on January 16, 1830, to DAVID PRICKETT, of a tract of land for two dollars and sixty-four cents signed by auditor JAMES T.B. STAPP. Both Prickett and Stapp were notable individuals in early Illinois.

STAPP was appointed auditor on August 29, 1831, by Governor John Reynolds, a position he held for nearly five years. Dr. Stapp was an aide de camp to Reynolds during the Black Hawk War and served in the Mexican-American War as an adjutant of the 3rd Illinois Infantry. When Zachary Taylor was elected president, Stapp was appointed Receiver of the Land Office at Vandalia. He served through President Millard Fillmore’s term and Pierce’s.

PRICKETT was admitted to the bar in 1821 and was the first supreme Court reporter in Illinois and later served as judge of the probate court in Madison County. In 1826, he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives representing Madison County. During the Black Hawk War, he served as aide-de-camp to General John D. Whiteside. In 1837, he was elected state’s attorney for the First Judicial Circuit of Illinois. In 1840, he became treasurer of the board of canal commissioners. From 1830 to 1839, Prickett served as clerk of the Illinois House.

Wafer seal intact.

Toning, folds. Very readable and a fine example of early Illinois history by two distinguished individuals.
