Stereoview by famed Western photographer Carelton Watkins. No. 4060. Lake Tahoe from Cave Rock. Part of his Watkins' New Series (mid to late 1870s).
Cave Rock is a resistant volcanic formation on Lake Tahoe’s east shore, composed mainly of 5 million year old andesitic rock. The original wagon road wrapped around its steep lake-facing side. In 1931, a highway tunnel was blasted through the rock, with a second tunnel added in 1957.
