2 haunted Bill Dickey baseball mitts Glove Spalding 101 Marvel h of f Bob Doerr:

Update. After months of research, we have discovered that Bob had a sizeable collection of mitts from players he knew in his early days. In those days, it was common for retiring players to turn in their uniforms. It was customary to either give away their personal gear or to trade with each other. We believe this was the case here. It is possible that there may even exist a documentary film of the event as pro players joined the Army or Navy during wwii. It would have encouraged others do enlist...which Bob later did after Dickey joined. I see Dickey using the darker mitt on early baseball cards. The newer two-tone can be seen in the 1942 movie...Pride of the YAnkees. It is clearly visible in the locker room scene where Dickey hits a guy for off-color remarks about Lou Gehrig. My queries to Spaulding have gone unanswered.. Of course, there is always DNA...if you can find a relative. . My sister discovered that the signature on the 1940s mitt is hall of fame 2nd baseman Bob Doerr. Bob played for the Red Soxs. Both Bob Doerr and Bill Dickey played in the All Stars games numerous times in the 1940s. Both men joined the military during world war two and missed at least one season of pro ball. Because of the military service, I think both Dickey and Doerr bonded. The mitt signed by Doerr has seen very little use. The two men played in both the 1943 and 1946 All star games. Either he gave the newer mitt to Doerr after the 43 game because he no longer needed it (he joined the Navy in March 1944), or after the 46 game when he quit. Bob Doerr was 99 years old when he died December 13, 2017 in Junction City, Oregon. His personal belongings...including these two mitts, were subsequently donated to Goodwill. I bought them from the guy who bought them from that retail chain. How much are two game used mitts worth? I don't know. We know the signed one was used in a movie and at least one All star game. Both men are Hall of Fame players. If I were rich, I'd donate them to a museum. But I'm not rich and barely squeeking by. To top it all off, just noticed that one mitt looks smaller than the other in my original picture so I placed them side by side and took more photos to try to show they are the same size. Even stacking them on top of each other didn't work. To the naked eye they are the same. But in my pictures, one is always bigger. That being said, Been trying to research these online and having a hard time because Spalding refuses to release their records. Bill played for the Yankees from 1928 to 1946. He joined the Navy in 1944. Then rejoined the Yankees in 1946. I feel that the newer mitt may have been used by him in the 1942 movie "Pride of the Yankees." And/or in 1946. It makes sense when you consider that the first mitt is a bit worn and the second has very little use. Truly odd for something so expensive back then. Both mitts have the same markings. 101 Marvel Spalding tannage. Custom built and hand tailored padding. Even the impressed signature of Bill Dickey is the same on both gloves. This signature is not at all like any other gloves I see or have seen. Most have his name in block letters that are aligned straight. Here the Bill is considerably lower than the last name. Considering that these gloves are at least a decade apart, and they are obviously two different styles, we know they were made for a pro player as the markings should have changed. I have seen numerous photos of Dickey with this darker mitt. Been trying to pull up footage of the 1946 all star game to see what glove he wore. Of course, the best evidence would be DNA tests. But who knows where his living relatives are. Are there any?
