1968 Topps 3-D Uncut Sheet with Roberto Clemente and Two Unissued Proof Cards:
$125000.00

Presented is an extraordinary 1968 Topps 3-D uncut sheet with nine different cards, including one of the most perfect and noteworthy examples of Roberto Clemente that could possibly exist, and which by chance and good fortune happens to be in a perfectly preserved spot on the sheet. This is one of only a few uncut sheets of 1968 Topps 3-D with Clemente that we know to exist. The additional players featured on this sheet are Jim Maloney, John O’Donogue (proof card - No Team/Player Designation – it is interesting to note that the background used on this card is completely different from the other proof examples that we have seen), Ron Fairly, Willie Davis, Tony Perez, Tommy Davis (proof card - No Team/Player Designation), Ron Swoboda and Bill Robinson. In the world of baseball-card collecting, many serious collectors revere the 1968 Topps 3-D set more than any other set of its era. Whether these cards were actually issued in stores remains a mystery, but legend has always had it that, as a test, a few boxes were distributed to select stores in the Brooklyn, N.Y., area. To the best of our knowledge, however, most 1968 Topps 3-D cards (including this sheet) can ultimately be traced back to someone who worked at Topps or Xograph (the company that produced these cards for Topps). Both for their extreme rarity, as well as for their very striking and unique design, advanced collectors have always held 1968 Topps 3-D cards in the highest esteem. The fragile nature of all 3-D cards (very susceptible to surface cracks) make high-grade examples all the rarer. This is a beautiful sheet! It is bright, crisp, and clean, with brilliant colors throughout. The sheet has a Near Mint or better appearance, The balance of the cards on the sheet, including Clemente, are free of any noticeable creasing or cracking that so often plagues cards from this series.. This is an extremely significant uncut sheet of 1968 Topps 3-D baseball cards, with a stunning example of key card Roberto Clemente, one of Clemente's most important cards, and one of the most famous of all 1960s bubble-gum cards. An incredible addition to any world-class uncut sheet, Topps, or Roberto Clemente collection. Dimensions: 7.25 x 11 inches.

Here is text from a previous listing back from 2007 which sold for $47,800 which had a crease, and which also included the xograoh coating. ———

Updated condition report: Please note that our cataloger inadvertently failed to report a thin crease that passes horizontally through the lower half inch of the sheet's center cards. There is no effect upon the cards in the upper or lower rows.

One of the true rarities of the modern card era, the 1968 Topps 3-D test issue is among the most sought after and valuable sets from any decade. These attractive cards are extremely rare, produced in miniscule numbers as a test issue that was only distributed to a select few candy stores within walking distance to the Topps Company headquarters. Originally owned by an ex-employee of the Texas based company Xograph, which was contracted by Topps for the production of these high-tech cards, this uncut sheet and the one that precedes it are believed to be the only known examples to the hobby. Xograph would later go on to produce the popular Kellogg's 3-D sets. It is widely believed that all the discovered cards from this set have come directly from someone who either worked for Topps or Xograph. The Tommy Davis and John O'Donoghue proof cards present on this sheet were only recently discovered and brought $30,000+ apiece at sale in June of 2006. Also included on this first sheet is the late great Roberto Clemente, whose card has brought as much as $30,000 itself in the past year. Rounding out the sheet are Jim Maloney, Ron Fairly, Willie Davis, Tony Perez, Ron Swoboda and Bill Robinson. This could very well be a one-time offering, destined to never repeat itself. The uncut sheet itself is in pristine condition, well-preserved with no visible defects.
