Mateo "Matty" Alou (1938-2011) was born and died in the Dominican Republic. He was a left-handed hitting outfieloder, and played n15 seasons in the majors for the Giants (1960-1965), Pirates (1966-1970), Cardinals (1971-1972 & 1973), Oak. A's (1972), Yankees (1972), Padres (1974), and 3 seasons in Japan (1974-1976). Alou was a 2-time All-Star, and played in 1667 games, hitting .307, with 1777 hits, 31 HRs, 427 RBIs, and 156 stolen bases. He had 8 seasons of hitting .300+, and led the league with a career high .342 in 1966, with 2 HRs, 27 RBIs,. a career high 23 stolen bases, and finished 9th in MVP. In 1969, Alou hit .331, with 22 stolen bases, and league leading and career high 231 hits, 41 doubles, made the All-Star team, finishing 23rd in MVP. He hit a career high 7 HRs, and 74 RBIs in 1971, and played in 1 ALCS, 1 NLCS, and the 1972 ALCS & W.S. (for the A's), hitting .232 in 23 games. On 6-23-07, Alou was inducted into the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum HOF. He died 11-3-11 at age 72 from complications of diabetes. His brothers, Felipe, Jesus, and nephews Moises Alou & Luis & Mel Rojas, all played in the majors.
