On offer in this sale with a reserve price, is a complete MASTER set of two-hundred and thirty (230) '1965 CFL Coca-Cola (Coke) Player Bottle Caps', mounted in the nine (9) team shields, that were available either by mail order or at selected grocery stores. In addition, the lot also contains six (6) of the cap holder shipping boxes, a Weekend magazine cut-out advertisement, a full 1965 programme containing the ad (for Dick Shatto Day), and a very rare cap holder (wall plaque) mail-in order form. This set was planned and released by Coca-Cola early in the 1965 football season before the rosters were set and was originally scheduled to be 216 player caps, which equaled the 24 caps per team that each plaque would hold, for each of the nine teams. However, due to early season roster moves, cuts, trades, etc. fourteen extra caps were issued, making the set complete at 230 caps. The greatest number of additional caps were issued by the weakest teams that understandably had the most player moves in the league, namely the Edmonton Eskimos and Toronto Argos having 28 and 30 player caps issued respectively. In addition two players, Don Fuell and Hal Ledyard had caps for two different teams. Because of these additional caps being added late and first-issue caps being withdrawn, there are a number of nasty short-print caps in this set, making a complete set of 230 caps difficult to complete and extremely rare in any condition!!This set DOES have the full complement of 230 player caps and is to the best of my knowledge the ONLY full set of CFL Coke Caps with all the team shields! For the record approximately 5% of the caps are French-type (Buvez Coke) with the remaining 95% being the English (Drink Coke) variety. Condition of the caps is as good as one could hope for with over 90 to 95% of the caps being barely to lightly scratched. Since I was looking for caps to put in the holders, the search for these caps was tedious and painstaking and took a long time (about fifteen years) as not only was I looking for as clean a cap I could find, I also needed caps that were not bent or misshaped when they were removed from the bottles, so they would easily fit into the holders! In addition to the high quality of the caps, all the rare and fragile shields/holders, which measure approximately 16" by 14", are in remarkable condition, with five (5) of the holders being a clean near mint with no missing pieces, two (2) of the holders having only a few light surface bends, and two of the holders having a couple of minor cracks that break the surface, and one of the holder is missing the some of the side and the bottom lip pieces (Calgary). None of the holders are toned or stained, with all of them displaying nice white surfaces. In addition, the team logo graphics are unscratched and clean and bright. Finally, the 'central football area' of the cap holders, which is very easily and commonly found highly scratched, scuffed, and/or faded, are all uniformly unscuffed (except for a few minor wear marks), with strong colour and minimal scratching found for the most part around the recess cap holder area.
To summarize, the offered collection also includes:a) six (6) of the original Coke cap holder cardboard storage/shipping boxes, with five of them being in great
shape with one of the boxes banged up at one end with water staining and/or damage b) a Weekend magazine cut-out ad with a couple of creases and tiny stains in the corners from previous
mounting c) a full page ad from an entire programme in excellent condition (Dick Shatto Day: Als vs Argos: October 16,
1965) d) an extremely rare Wall Plaque/Cap Holder bilingual Mail-In Order Form. The form, which measures 7" by 4
1/2" has some staining, folding/creasing.
As an indication of value, in the remarkable and recently published "COLLECTING CANADIAN FOOTBALL", the author Andy Malycky values the complete cap set at $1200.00 (which in my opinion is somewhat low for a "complete" set), and near mint holders at $250.00 each (which is about right). Please see the twelve (12) ENLARGED SCANS! Please feel free to ask any questions or request additional and larger scans of any particular cap and/or shield. The first nine scans are the holders with the following team's caps respectively: Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Edmonton, Montreal, BC, Winnipeg, Calgary, Saskatchewan. The tenth scan shows the additional caps not in the holders namely, six Toronto, four Edmonton, two Montreal, one Winnipeg, and one additional Saskatchewan cap/s. Payment is PayPal, but I will accept other forms of payment, if you wish. Please note that the listed shipping charge is only approximate and does not include insurance. Please wait for my invoice before sending payment.PLEASE NOTE: A) In response to many requests I WILL NOT break up this set at this time. It will only be sold intact as it is listed here!!
