Using other brands, the tone generator is week (even on the high level), and if there is live phone line on the pair (or network), you can hardly hear anything on the amplified probe. I use it with another IDEAL unit that check the line, and can tone on live lines. This probe fit that unit. The Probe is ok, it does have a good tip.

This unit works great! I disconnected the romex cable from the AC power, attached the tone generator to the cable, and easily traced where the cable went through the walls and ceiling. Since adjacent cables can pick up and retransmit the tone, I isolated them by disconnecting them from power and grounding them. That way, only the cable of interest had the tone radiating from it. The unit comes with adapters to trace telephone and TV cables as well.
This tone generator and inductive amplifier kit is the best one ever offered by I deal Industries. They just keep getting better. Visually its two tone Grey / black color scheme is very smart and modern. Operation is smooth and straightforward and it JUST WORKS. Does everything it claims to and a bit more. Changing the battery of the tone generator is a little different but once you have worked out how it opens its very slick. The tone amplifier probe is solid,very positive and a crisp clear tone with quite a high level of volume. It would benefit from a headset jack and a quick change tip, both of which it lacks unfortunately. This has to be one the best tone and probe kit ever offered by Ideal and personally speaking it beats all the other offerings hands down.
