Zuni HARRY DEUTSAWE Butterfly Bolo \"Book Piece\" Mosaic Inlay Stunning Early:
$679.00

Welcome!

Harry Deutsawe was one of the very finest early mosaic stone to stone inlay artists. He lived from 1912 to 1986. He had a distinctive style  in which the silver channel walls became part of the design, so that sometimes there was stone to stone inlay between them and sometimes just one stone in the mosaic overlay. There is an almost identical butterfly in the form of a pin, which was done by Harry Deutsawe along with Leonard Martza which is in a Sei book, the page of which is above. But this piece was an earlier piece and Harry did his own silver work on this piece. This was confirmed by the family. The back of the bolo suggests it was done before the Bennett clasps were made, in the 1930s-1957, because it uses the silver wires as keepers for the leather tie. It was made by Harry alone and he did his own silver work and it was done much earlier than the piece in the book. I must remark on the exceptional beauty of the work. It\'s a joy. The tips and the leather tie are hand made and lovely, too. The piece is perfectly integrated and everything about it is original. There\'s slight stone wear on the bottom left jet inlay; it\'s minimal and it\'s the only problem. It\'s in excellent vintage condition. The tie is still flexible and is fine in the wire keepers. This butterfly is gorgeous and it\'s quite rare. I\'ve included a picture of the pin in Sei\'s book \"Hopi Bird and Sun Face in Zuni Jewelry\" page 11. I think this is a rare treasure and suitable for every collection.

This piece has been confirmed as having been made by Harry, by his family. This butterfly measures 1-¼” X 1-13/16\", the tips measure 1-5/8\" and the tie measures end to end with the tips included about 39-1/2\". The tie and tips are hand made and the inlay is in the unique style of this extraordinary pair of artists. The weight of the entire piece is 24.2 grams. It\'s fairly unusual to find pieces by him, especially made by him alone, so it\'s a great collector\'s item.
