WW2 Cartomap - Chungking - \"The Hump\" - Sgt Lefty Burgess - original photostat:
$80.00

This cartoon map of Chungking from 1945 is an original Photostat owned by a WW2 B-24 Flight Engineer/Gunner who served with the 7th Bombardment Group in the China-Burma-India Theater. Known as \"The Hump.\"

It is possible it was actually saved from WW2. Or more likelythe Photostat was made from aWW2 original. Possibly to publish in the newspaper. Since the vet was also a newspaperman. OrPhotostats were made for a veteran\'s convention.ThePhotostat also appears to beslightly larger than the contemporary original, which is said to be 9 x 12.5 inches.

This original Photostatmeasures 9.5 x 13.5 inches and is in great condition. It was originally crafted by Sgt \"Lefty\" Burgess. And is likely a good 50 or 60 years old and it is possible it could even be an \"official issue\" fromWW2. It is folded in two, but the fold appears undamaged.

In any case it is very rare. You cangoogle - Sgt Lefty Burgess Chungking map - to see another image of the same cartomap. You can also google - Chongqing Lefty Burgess - to see a copy in a Chinese blog.

Looks like the original map was commonly distributed tomilitary personnel who were either stationed in Chungking or who were travellingthrough Chungking. But whether it was some type of standard item or more like a souvenir is unclear.

Also turns out - Lefty Burgess - Byrel W Burgess - made other cartoonmapsfor cities wherehe was stationed, including Frankfort.

1960 - Staff Biography
Office of Vice President Richard Nixon

JAMES P. FLOWERS

Several years ago a bigtime gambler and hoodlum shook his finger in the face of a young cub reporter and snarled a threat: \"Print that story and they\'ll fish you outta the river in the morning. \"

The place was Phenix City, Alabama. The time, summer 1949. The newspaperman was James Flowers, a police reporter for the Columbus (Ga. ) Ledger--just across the Chattahoochee River--and part of a team working on a massive expose of conditions in the Alabama town.

The story was printed, Phenix was later cleaned up in sensational fashion, the Ledgar won a Pulitzer Prize for its part, and \"Jim\" Flowers is still very much alive. At present he\'s a campaign press assistant for the Vice President, on leave of absence since March 1 from his position as Associate Editor and writer for King Features Syndicate (Hearst) in New York City.

Prior to joining King five years ago, Jim was a syndicated feature writer for NEA (Scripps-Howard) , a general news reporter for the Providence (R.I.) Journal-Bulletin, a financial writer for the New York Journal-American (wrote the stock market column) and a reporter for the Wall Street Journal. He arrived on the New York scene in 1950.

Born August 5, 1918 in Sylvester, Georgia, Flowers grew up in Moultrie, Georgia, attending public schools there. He played football in High School and was a star first baseman on the baseball team. He also played on a championship American Legion team from Georgia and later received a trial with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Jim enlisted in the United States Army in February, 1942, then transferredto the Army Air Force where he served as a flight engineer-gunner on a B-24 until his discharge in November, 1945. He spent a year in the China-Burma -India theater with the famed 7th Bombardment Group.

After the war, Flowers enrolled in the University of Georgia and received an A. B. Degree in Journalism in 1949, stepping off the campus for the job with the Ledger . While at the University he served as editor of the student newspaper. In 1952, he received a Master\'s Degree in Political Science from Columbia University in New York, majoring in International Relations.

Flowers makes his home in New York City and is an active member of the Overseas Press Club in New York and the National Press Club, Washington, D. C.

Jim is still a sports fan. A better-than-average golfer, he gets around the course in the low 80\'s \"when he\'s playing regularly\". He likes most spectator sports, especially baseball and football. And every Spring still gets the urge \"to grab a glove and work out a bit. \"
