$65.00

This is for a hard to find civil war era medical irrigation or enema? syringe marked \"The I.R. Comb Co. Goodyear 1851\". The I.R. Comb Co is the Indian Rubber Comb Company. Vulcanite was produced by treating natural or Indiarubber with sulfur, then exposing it to moderate heat. The resulting material was elastic and could be made into the desired shape while warm, but became hard and durable once cooled. Developed by Charles Goodyear in 1836 and patented by him in 1844, vulcanization revolutionized the rubber industry. The syringe has not been cleaned and is in very good condition with no repairs or restorations. It is 8.375\" (213mm) long and the barrel is 1.5\" (40mm) in diameter. The end of the vulcanite plunger is covered with what appears to be leather. See images for condition. Questions are welcome.
