I am pleased to offer this vintage and quite rare Morrill's late 1800's, early 1900's football face mask or guard - patented on September 29, 1891. These vintage masks seldom come on the market for sale. Many football collectors see these masks hanging from the neck of players in the old photos and do not realize what they are. I can't imagine wearing one of these and actually taking a hit to the face. I believe these masks stopped being used in the 1920's due to them causing more injuries than they prevented (a dentists dream). These masks were worn directly over the nose, were tied around the head by the strap and the player actually bit-down on the interior bite plate while trying to breath through the holes in the bite plate and the front of the guard/mask itself.
This is the real thing - it is not some reproduction. The hard rubber mask is in good shape as they were virtually indestructible. The original strap is with this mask although it is torn (a very easy fix). Important because the strap was often lost over time. There are teeth marks on the inside bite plate and the initials yy on the inside of the brow plate and initials ST. on the outside right of the mask. The outside of the brow plate reads (in raised letters)Morrill's Patent Nose Mask and Patd Sept. 29, 1891 is on the inside right of the mask (raised letters as well).
I have tried to provide quality photos of this rare mask. The photos show the outside of the mask, the mask with the broken strap, the inside of the mask and the initials inside and out. The teeth mark images do not show well on the inside on the bite plate.
