Click to View Image Album A little of the history of MAR-KEL: Until the late 1990\'s, MAR-KEL LIGHTING / POTTERY operated in Paris, Tennessee. After working for many years with ROYAL HICKMAN, this was Frank Petty\'s last employer. In the early years, Hickman worked at Russell Potteries, in Paris, TN, and it was in Paris, that Hickman first used what later became known as the PETTY CRYSTAL GLAZE.

Petty was an important figure in American Art pottery, having modeled, sculpted, and designed for Camark, Niloak, Haeger, Bradley Lamp Co, Phil-Mar Lamp Co, and others. In 1973, he was a founding partner in Mar-Kel. For an interesting and detailed story about the career of Petty, please see Joe & Joyce paradis\' book THE HOUSE OF HAEGER 1914-1944.

When Mar-Kel Lighting went out of business, I was one of the first collectors allowed inside the closed headquarters. I was able to roam the factory, searching for interesting items to purchase. The items I will be listing tonight are the last of that collection. Please take a look at my other sales for advertising items, molds, samples, and design workbooks.

This is a LARGE vintage HORSE HEAD model in chalk or plaster, used in the manufacture of a TV lamp. Almost certainly a piece modeled by Petty after an earlier Hickman design for Haeger. Found stored in the old workshop / office of Frank Petty, at the MAR-KEL factory warehouse.

Very interesting, is the fact that there are areas where the plaster was shaved, and texture marks were added, during the design process. A true working model.

This is not a complete lamp, it is a piece during the design and production process. Also included is the plaster or chalk base that this piece was sitting on, when found. (The base may or may not be original to the head.)

The horsehead measures 10\" tall, and is quite heavy. It has a few chips and nicks, and a repair to the horse\'s mane. A wonderful piece, with a personal connection to Petty.

Guaranteed to be vintage, and not a reproduction! PaymentBack to Top
