Complete in original carrying case with built in antennas, Buyoldstuff is happy to offer thisvintage very clean, 1948 unrestorred Pilot Radio Model TV-37“Candid”portable TV set with a 3 inch screen.

Original power cord is good, TV powers up, tubes light and it hums slightly, but no static or picture on the screen. I’ve had this TV in my personal collection since about 1998 and it is unrestorred, exactly as Ipurchased it. It is complete with all knobs and the case is in remarkable condition with just some minor paint loss along the bottom probably from taking it in and out of the original case that houses the 2 antennas. The words“Front” and“Top” are written on the carrying case to be assurred it isopened in the correct manner. These words look like they would probably come off, but I will leave that to the new owner.

The TV measures about14 inches wide, 13 inches deep, and 9.5 inches high. The carrying case is about 16 x 15.5 x 11 inches. The 2 antennas built in the case are complete and not broken, but one of the antennas is missing some mounting hardware in the case, so it is somewhat loose.

I’ve had a number of 1940’s televisions in my collection, and this one by far got the most attention. I treasured it, but like all things, it should find a new owner to love it as much as I did. An incredible conversation piece. Has a wonderful bakelite grill around the tiny 3 inch screen.

The Pilot TV-37 is an unusual vintage television with a tiny 3-inch picture tube that is barely watchable by today’s standards, but the TV-37\'s compact size and unusual design make it a favorite for collectors.

Pilot introduced the TV-37 in 1948, at the then-amazingly low price of $99. Pilot only made these sets for a few years and it was very popular with students going off to college.

TVs in the 1940s sold for hundreds of dollars, the cost of a decent automobile.

The TV is housed in a streamlined cabinet with a wooden base and an upper case made of pressboard. The set measures 14 inches wide, 13 inches deep, and 9.5 inches high, the size of a large table radio. Most of the upper case is perforated for ventilation.

The front controls are simple with only four knobs for power/volume, brightness, tuning, and contrast. The tuner control includes a high/low switch, which lets you select two tuning ranges. The low range is channels 2-6 and the high range is channels 7-13. Unlike most TV tuners, the Pilot\'s is continuously variable. Instead of clicking from one station to the next, it turns smoothly like a radio tuner. This was to save money since the Pilot tuner contains far fewer parts than other TV tuners. Its construction is similar to a radio tuner, using air variable capacitors, pulleys and strings.
