TheM9 is a multi-purpose military knife system officially adopted in 1986 by theUnited States. It has a 7-inch (18 cm) blade and is issued with a pouch and sharpening stone on the sheath. The sheathis designed to double as a wire cutter. TheM9 multipurpose knife system is used as:

-A carbine attachable knife

-An edged melee weapon

-A general field and utilityknife

-A wire cutter when used onthe sheath

-A wood saw

TheM9 also can be used with the Mossberg special purpose 590.
