TRADE OR BELT AXE 1700’S TO EARLY 1800’SWITH COA!
BUTLER COA *1 –MUSEUM GRADE!
Upfor sale is a late 1700’s to early 1800’s Trade or Belt Axe with ash woodhandle and brass tacks. This is a small,hand forged iron axe with a round poll.It was correctly manufactured for the time period by taking a red hotstrap of iron and hammering around a blacksmiths mandrel and forged together.The handle appears to be original; showing a number of old dings and dents justbelow the head. There are Indian style embellishmentsof four round tacks on each side of the haft.According to the authenticator, there is clear evidence of red and whitepin-stripped paint running latterly from grip to head. I cannot see the faded paint the authenticatornoted but he may have used ultraviolet light or a microscope to observeit. The head is loose which is verycommon for tomahawks and axes of this age.The wood dries out and shrinks with time. Two of the eight tacks were replaced at onetime otherwise it is completely original.This was a woodsman’s tool used for cutting kindling, clearing brush,meat preparation and if necessary, a weapon.The COA gives a great deal of information concerning itsauthenticity. These rarely come onto themarket and are high on the desirability list.

He spends the time necessary to determineauthenticity with 30 years experience.He will not paper a bad artifact, period! He has probably exposed morefakes than any other authenticator the last several years. He has seen every trick in the book so it ishighly unlikely that a fake will ever make it through his stringent examinationand papering processes.

Please do notexpect me to entertain opinions from them either. It would be great if all collectables onlyneeded one C.O.A. from a reputable firm like PCS of BGS which are universallyrespected. Until this happens, I willcontinue to post my opinions about authenticators, good or bad, on everypapered item I place on the market in the way notes. I also provide the best images possible ofeach artifact so prospective buyers can make an informed purchasing decision. I have no problem sending artifacts purchasedfrom me here on directly to reputable authenticators. I will not send items to dealers listed onthe “Authenticator Hall Of Shame” list that was compiled by AACA members and isquietly being circulated.
