Vintage 1910\'s Gentleman\'s Collapsible Silk Opera Hat!!!!!

This rare Genuine Vintage Hat belonged to our German grandfather, who was a veteran of the first WW.

Marked \"GTST\" inside crown with a wonderful striding Satyr mark. We assume the hat was Austrian or German.

The interior perimeter is about 21\" or 21.5\" around. We measured several times from the outside, using a string, with a plastic bag around the hat to protect the delicate silk from grime. The diameter from back to front is 7 5/8\", and from side to side is about 6 3/8\"--hopefully this gives you a good idea of the fit. If these measurements are not precise enough for your taste we apologize and recommend you seek your headgear from someone who specializes in vintage millenery.

(From photos it looks like Opa\'s head was relatively small and narrow, with a high forehead. He passed before we were born, so we never met him).

The crown flares nicely to height of 5\" from the base of the band to the flat top.

The hat does collapse, but has been stored extended in its box for most of 50+ years, upside down, resting gently on the crown, resulting in its fabulous condition.

(Collapsing an opera hat: place crown facing your chest. \"Bear-hug\" the brim evenly into your chest to flatten hat. To open, hold front of brim --crown facing downwards--and firmly tap the other side of brim on your other wrist. Wear gloves so you do not mar the silk with oils from your skin).

We love this hat and hate to part with it, but no one in the family any longer has a small enough head, and we don\'t have the proper conditions to maintain it in its current beautiful state.

The hat box is included in this sale. It has some tears, the fabric tie is faded and bolts are not secure. It still does a good job of protecting the hat. It is lined with an October 17, 1960 \"Der Allgauer\" newspaper, which our Oma put in to protect it when she gave us the hat. Some crepe paper and a plastic bag also protect the hat.

Condition: Excellent with the following notes: some small \"bubbles\" in silk on top of brim. Interior silk shows some minor staining from forehead, Black band is slightly drooped on some edges. No discernable holes, rips, or stains. Grosgrain on brim in good condition. Opens and closes evenly.

Opa\'s leather gloves (pictured on top of the hat box) will be feature in a companion sale--they are not included here .

For this particular sale we will consider shipping 2nd Day for domestic (lower 48 states), if buyer needs it quickly.
