Very rare, original, 1859 George Washington Mint Medal / Medalet / Token. This outstanding, original 1859 Washington Mint Medal measures approx. 13/16" in diameter (21.4mm) and was issued by the US Mint in anticipation of its 1860's and 1870's Washingtonia Collection . This important, Bronze Medalet was engraved by Anthony C.
Pacquet and was available for purchase by those visiting the U. S. Mint in 1859. The Medal is designated as Baker 325C.
The obverse of the medal shows a bust portrait of Washington in civilian dress that is thought to be based on the unfinished Gilbert Stuart painting with text above that reads "Pater Patriae". The reverse features a laurel wreath surrounding text that reads "A Memorial of the Washington Cabinet / May 1859".
On February 22, 1860 the Philadelphia Mint formally inaugurated the Washington Cabinet of Medals. The event culminated over a decade of intensive collecting by the mint with a printed description of the medals published in 1861 by the Mint's director James Ross Snowden. During the 1860's and 70's the collection of Washingtonia was the most celebrated of the mint's holdings. Even before the collection was officially inaugurated the engraver Anthony C. Paquet created the Medal offered here to be purchased as a souvenir by those visiting the mint collection. Paquet's monogram, an "A" combined with a "P", appears in the center of the ridge at the arm truncation.

Important Notes about Shipping Charges and the "Detailed Seller Rating" Star System:
The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee.
We have NEVER requested response from our customers as we were taught that "fishing for compliments" was impolite but the new Detailed Rating System has put us in a rather tight spot. Most buyers are unaware that bases a monthly fee discount on a Seller's "Star" rating. A monthly average of "4.6 Stars" (in any one of the four "Star" categories) costs us approximately $400 in additional Fees - that's $400 above what we would pay if we had a "4.8 Star" average in all 4 "Star" categories!! As a consequence we hope you do not find us rude to ask that if you are happy with our items, our service, and our packing & shipping please be sure to use the "Star" rating system and remember that a "5 Star" rating is the only way we can qualify for 's fee reduction program. ,
