This is the American made Palstar R30CC ham and shortwavereceiver that has created a lot of buzz among enthusiasts.Over the years,Palstar has manufactured the R30 receiver, but this version, the R30CC, is theversion that isvery desirable due to it\'s use of 2 Collins mechanicalfilters for superb selectivity. (thus the moniker of \"CC\" at the endof the R30). Thus, you have the best selectivity since these Collins filters are legendary for their steep skirts. You may see these installed filters in the picture at the top of this listing.

This Palstar R30CC comes with a copy of the user manual, a copy of the manual on CD, a couple of receiver reviews, and the low noise Jameco AC power adapter. The R30CC is used, but ingood condition cosmetically with only a couple of minor signs of prior ownership. Please look at my pictures for cosmetic details. Electronically the radio works perfectly with no known deficiencies. The physical size is about 25% of the D*rake R*8 for comparison.

Palstar has been manufacturing a version of the R30 for a numberof years and the acceptance within the shortwave community has been very strong. If you like a shortwave receiver that has loads of buttons and controls, theR30CC will seem disappointing to you. The designer has gone to lengths to makethis an easy to use, but strong performer. That means it does not include someof the bells and whistles that users often expect, but sometimes seldom use. Icompare it to the typical TV or DVD that has a lot of remote control buttons, but which only about 20% of them are used with any regularity. As a result, thefolks at Palstar have taken the time to make this a very user friendly unit. Ifyou are intimidated by some of the complex receivers and their controls, thesimplicity of the Palstar R30CC should appeal to you.

The R30 series of receivers has often been compared to anotherpopular receiver....the L*owe HF*150. I know that there is a danger wheneverreceivers are compared, but there are obvious similarities. Here is a brieflist of those similarities:

·Both units are relatively small in size

·Both have robust cabinets

·Both have excellent audio, especially forthe size of the cabinet

·Both lack a keypad, but have rapid tuningfeatures to overcome any perceived tuning difficulties

·Both have been designed toward simplicity

·Both have the ability to operate off of ahandful of AA batteries for portable use

·Both emphasize substance over style

·Both have been reviewed favorably despitetheir offering of minimal features

There may be more things to compare, but you get the idea. ThePalstar products are manufactured in Ohio by a small firm that represents thebest of what America has brought forth with regards to a small business and theentrepreneurial spirit of our society. The proof of this type of manufacturing,as they say, is in the pudding. Here is a link to the reviews by other users ofthe R30 on Eham:

If you should ever need to phone Palstar with any questions,don\'t be surprised if the owner, Paul Hrivnak, should answer the phone. It iscommon for the president of Palstar to be the one to field your questions.

Despite it\'s simplicity, the R30CC has some excellent features:

·Powerful audio using a 5 watt amp

·Two tuning speeds that adjust quicker asyou tune the knob faster

·100 memory positions

·Fast / Slow AGC

·AM / USB / LSB modes

·Fast tune slew buttons move at 500 KHz perpush

·Headphone jack

·Internal battery compartment for portableDX use

·Dial light button to preserve batteriesduring portable use

·Coverage from 100 KHz up to 30 MHz

·Collins mechanical filter for 5.5 KHzand a Collins mechanical filter for2.5 KHz bandwidthinall modes

·Attenuator for strong signals

·Analog S meter for accurate signal strengthrecognition

·Bail tilt bar to angle the R30CC for bestuser operation

One of the nice features of this R30CC is that as a smalltabletop receiver it can be used for portable listening. You would not tote it tothe ballpark, but you would be able to take it to the cabin, the RV, or just ahike in the woods. You would need to makea provision for a receiving antenna like temporarily stringing a long wire, butthis can be done in a matter of minutes for such applications. The receiveruses AA batteries in series and once installed you could enjoy an afternoon oran evening of DXing at a favorite spot. There is a picture of the battery tray in the picture at the top of this listing.

Palstar has recently replaced this R30CC serieswith a newer receiver, the R30*A. The main difference is that the Collins filters are now standard, not optional as in this R30CC. Also, there was a need to redesign the frontpanel since the encoder became unavailable. Thus, Palstar recessed the maintuning knob into the front panel as required during this redesign. This has ledmany to explain that they feel that this model....the R30CC is the favoredversion to own. Precision tuning is easier when the tuning knob is notrecessed.

Reception of the R30CC in the DX community has been quite goodand this receiver is said to be especially hot on the Medium Wave band, thoughit is sensitive throughout it\'s entire receiving range. In the event you careto read more about this amazing receiver, here is more information.
