This fife is a transposing instrument, with the Bb5 sound typically written as a D4 sound. Also, the fife has almost a 3 octave range, from a low D to a high B (which is sounding Bb4 to G7 (on a piano keyboard of full range A0 to C8)), and the Bb fifes are generally played in their higher second and third octaves up to the high B, (Bb5 to G7), which is truly piccolo territory. The fife is designed and tuned by the maker to the A=440 standard.
