Hello & welcome!

This National NC-125 General CoverageShortwave Receiver was producedbetween 1950 -1956. It uses 8 tubes andtunes from 550 KHz to 36 MHz in four bands. The NC-125 was a very popular receiver forboth Hams and Shortwave DX enthusiasts during it\'s day. It has a double tuned RFgain stage for improved sensitivity and selectivity, ANL, AVC, AM or CW withvariable BFO, calibrated band spread for 10, 11, 15, 20, 40,and 80 meters, RFand AF gain controls, RF Trimmer, Tone control, and an S-Meter. As with mosthigh performance shortwave receivers, it requires an external speaker (notincluded). It has a Phone jack for head phones and a NBFM jack for a NarrowBand FM adapter (not included).

The exterior & interior is in very nicecondition, as seen in the photos. There is a slight ding in the lower left frontcorner, as seen in the photo. There are also a few minor scratches in thepaint, very typical for receivers from the 50’s. The front panel is completelyauthentic and all of its lettering is sharp and bright. All of the dials areoriginal. All of the glass windows are scratch free and clear. Also included isa 24 page reproduced manual. The manual has complete operating and alignment instructions,a parts list and schematics. This sale is for the pictured NC-125 receiver anda copy of the manual. Winning buyermust pay within3 days via PayPal. This NC-125 will be shipped inside two boxes andwill include free insurance.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The NC-125 is a superheterodyneRadio Receiver having a complement of eleven tubes, including a rectifer and avoltage regulator tube, with a continuous frequency coverage of from 560kilocycles to 35 megacycles. This Receiver is designed for the reception ofamplitude modulated voice or music and code telegraph signals throughout itsentire frequency range. A calibrated illuminated slide-rule dial providesdirect reading scales in megacycles for each of the General Coverage ranges aswill as additional calibrated bandspread scales for the 10,11, 15, 20, 40 and80 meter amateur bands. The selectivity characteristic is adjustable over awide range from broad-band broadcast requirements to sharp amateur C.W.reception. This is accomplished by incorporating the well known Select-O-Jectvariable audio frequency device in the Receiver circuit design. The adjustableselectivity plus high sensitivity assures the operator of optimum receptionduring adverse operating conditions. The NC-125 employs a voltage regulatortube to minimize frequency drift in the high-frequency and beat-frequencyoscillators. This assures a minimum of frequency drift for both phone and codereception. Other highlights include an accessory connector socket, separateloudspeaker in matching cabinet and front-panel mounted S-meter. The separatebandspread control knob and linear logging dial scale makes possible fine,vernier-type tuning for any portion of the frequency spectrum covered by theReceiver. The usefulness of this feature will be outstanding on crowded bandssuch as the foreign broadcast band etc.

TUNING SYSTEM

The three-gang main tuningcapacitor, the panel-mounted Trimmer control and four set of coils are used toproperly tune the frequency range of the Receiver in four General Coveragetuning bands. The main tuning capacitor and the bandspread capacitor are connectedin parallel on all bands. A slide-rule type dial with two separate pointers isutilized. One of these pointers is synchronized with the main tuning controland the other with the bandspread control. The General Coverage portion of theslide-rule dial has four scales accurately calibrated for direct reading inmegacycles.

It will be noted that Band Dencompasses the entire Standard Broadcast Band. The respective scales aremarked with heavy white scorings to clearly locate for the operator suchshort-wave features as the Amateur, Police, Ship Frequencies and Foreign Broadcastbands. The Amateur bands tuneable by the NC-125 are listed below with theirband locations. Five accurately calibrated Bandspread scales are provided onthe slide-rule dial for each of the specified Amateur bands.

AUDIO OUTPUT

Two audio output circuits areprovided as follows:

(1) The Loudspeaker supplied withthe NC-125 is of the permanent magnet field type and is mounted in a cabinetfinished to match the Receiver. An output terminal strip is mounted at the rearof the Receiver for convenient connection of the Loudspeaker.

(2) A Phones jack is mounted on thefront panel and is wired so as to silence the loudspeaker when headphones areused. The headphones load impedance is not critical permitting a wide range ofheadphones types, including crystal, to be used.

SELECT-O-JECT

The NC-125 Receiver incorporates abuilt-in Select-O-Ject audio frequency circuit. By proper adjustment of thefront-panel mounted controls associated with this circuit any single frequencyselected in the range of approximately 80 to 10,000 cycles may be boosted orrejected. In phone reception the Select-O-Ject may be used for the rejection ofinterfering heterodynes . In C.W. reception interfering signal may be rejectedor, alternatively, the desired signal may be selected and amplified. In thereception or amplification of music, the Select-O-Ject may be used as anadjustable bass boost.

SIGNAL STRENGTH METER

Signal input reading are indicatedin S-units from 1 to 9 in 5 db. steps and in db. above 5-9 from 0 db. to 40 db.on the panel-mounted signal strength meter. The S-meter employs a 0-1milliampere movement and is connected in a bridge circuit. A variable resistoris placed in series with the meter to allow adjustment of the pointer to itselectrical zero setting. The correct dial setting for any specific station onthe dial is that setting which provides maximum deflection of the meterpointer.

POWER SUPPLY

The NC-125 Receiver is designed foroperation form a 105/130 volt, 50/60 cps., A.C. source of supply. Normal powerconsumption is approximately 91 watts. The built-in power supply provides allvoltages required by the heater and B supply circuits 2.85 amperes at 6.3 voltsand 92 milliamperes at 250 volts, respectively.

PHONO INPUT

A Phono input jack is mounted on thefront panel and can be used to connect auxiliary apparatus, such as a recordplayer pick-up or microphone into the audio system of the receiver. This inputcircuit is of high impedance providing a suitable match for such externalequipment into the first audio amplifier stage.

ACCESSORY CONNECTOR SOCKET

A standard octal type socket ismounted at the rear of the Receiver to permit convenient connection of anarrow-band F.M. adaptor. Reception of narrow-band F.M. signals may beaccomplished by plugging a National Model NFM-73B directly into the AccessorySocket and inserting the phone plug supplied with the unit into the Phono jackat the front of the Receiver. The drawing of the Accessory Connector Socket onthe Schematic Diagram show the various connections made to the pins of thesocket and voltages available. As will be noted B+ and filament voltages aswell as I.F. output are available at this socket permitting the connection ofauxiliary equipment. Consideration must be exercised to prevent loading any ofthese supplies beyond that for which they are designed.
