The primary difference between a tomahawk and an axe is the way the handle is designed. A tomahawk handle is tapered and gradually gets bigger closer to the top of the hawk. That is called a friction fit. An axe handle, like this LARGE FELLING AXE, is attached with steel and wood wedges that are driven into the top of the handle after the head has been attached.
History:

Early Euro-Americans described Indian axes and war clubs made of stone or wood as tomahawks, but eventually the term came to be applied exclusively to metal hatchets. Because of their versatility and superiority to native equivalents (non-metal), European manufactured tomahawks quickly became prized trade items and remained so well into the nineteenth century.
