Kenwood TS 180S HF Transceiver TS-180S base station ham radio For Sale

I purchased this radio at a garage sale, but I am not yet licensed to transmit on HF. I have attempted to test this radio, but admit I know little about the HF world. My dummy load gets plenty warm when testing the transmit function, and this appears to transmit a signal, as I was able to see the signal from another receiver while transmitting into the dummy load. I was able to tune in a local 1.610 mhz station, and also could hear a couple stations in the distance. I had it hooked up to a discone antenna. I expected better reception from the local station, so there may be an issue with receive, or it could be that I am in need of a better HF antenna.

The Kenwood TS-180S is designed for SSB, FSK and CW modes in the 160 through 10 meter ham bands. It also features receive of WWV at 10 MHz.
