Kenwood R-1000 Shortwave Receiver AM SSB CW Radio ***SHERMAN TANK OF RADIOS***:
$364.95

This receiver came into our hands with a few cosmetic marks, but nothing truly outstanding. The top and bottom covers show typical signs of age and use and you will see most of the age and wear marks on them. These R-1000\'s were manufactured over 3 decades ago and such marks are common. As is our custom, the externals have been cleaned to make sure that the receiver looks it\'s best and to sanitize it for the new owner. We ask that you look at our pictures carefully and use them to supplement this written description.

When the receiver came to us, the sensitivity was low. We sent this unit to the local repair shop for servicing and retested it upon its return to us. The frequencies have been tested and arerock solid stable, and all the controls operate as Kenwood designed them to do. This receiver now has excellent sensitivity.

This receiver comes with a copy of the user manual, a copy of the service manual, copies of a couple of classic advertisements,a couple of reviews of this receiver, andthe AC power cord. In addition, we are including a CD that contains both the user and service manuals plus the schematics, copies of promotional advertisements, and a medium wave mod (to improve sensitivity).

For those of you who like classic shortwave desktop receivers, you will love this Kenwood R-1000. Built from 1979 through 1985, this R-1000 is a stalwart of receiver design being built like a tank using heavy metal for it\'s construction. And while the fabrication of cabinet and chassis is sturdy, the internal components have weathered the course of time indicating that top quality components were utilized in the circuit design.

When growing up and during our youth, the words \"Made In Japan\" held a negative connotation not unlike other overseas goods have today when purchased in a big box store. Japan had the capabilities of producing good equipment as evidenced by the commercial receivers produced during that era. But the consumer goods in the 60\'s seemed to be cheaply made and just did not hold up. Yes, there were exceptions, but they were few. Then in the 70\'s and continuing into the 80\'s, Japan began to produce fantastic equipment and much of it displaced similar American made products. This R-1000 is not wimpy and the carry handle feels like it could be used as a pry bar if required to do so as it is that sturdy.

Introduced in the market from Japan in 1979, this R-1000 was priced modestly at about $450 to $499 at a time when it was hard to find such performance at this reasonable cost. The R-1000 offered digital readout and rock solid stability. Fred Osterman in his book \"Shortwave Receivers Past and Present\" says that this receiver is very stable after warmup making it suitable for the demands of quality RTTY. He also lists the receiver as \"a solid performer\" and gives it a full 5 star rating *****!

We have had our hands on probably 200 different shortwave radios / receivers over the years. Some of these were portable, some were designed specifically for amateur radio, some were high end consumer units, and some were mil spec receivers. However after spending some time with the R-1000, our thoughts are that it is a simple, but yet impressive, receiver.

You will not find a sync detector, notch filter, or passband tuning. However, while it is not loaded with features, it is a great performer and a very sensitive unit. Let us list some of the features for you:

  • Frequency coverage from 200 KHz to 30000 KHz
  • Operating modes of AM / USB / LSB / CW
  • Selectivity of 12 / 6 / 2.7
  • Digital readout with an analog sub-tuning
  • 12 hour clock / timer
  • Built in 4\" speaker for good sound
  • Tone control
  • S-meter
  • Lighted dial with dimmer switch for subdued lighting conditions
  • Noise blanker
  • Headphone jack
  • Record jack
  • Attenuator of 20 / 40 / 60 dB
  • Recorder activation
  • SO-259 antenna input or clip spring terminals
  • Circuit compliment of 40 ICs, 11 FETs, 64 Transistors, 71 Diodes
  • Sturdy carry / tilt handle
  • Operates on 100 / 120 / 220 / 240 VAC

If you are an advanced shortwave listener, you may want to consider other receiver options that will likely be more pricey. However if you are a beginning or intermediate listener, this is a fantastic receiver offering ease of operation and delivering excellent reception results.
